Granite - Today granite is used on a large scale as building stone ,road metal ,
dimensional and monument stone. Granite deposits of grey , pink, red and black varieties
are widely distributed in India . The good quality granite is mainly found in Barmer ,
Jalore and Sirohi districts of Rajasthan .Of the 3,000 million cu. m. of estimated granite
reserves in India , nearly 1,128 million cu. m. are in Rajasthan.
Marble - 95% of all the marble produced in India is from Rajasthan .It has the
largest reserves of superior quality marble in India and is also a leading producer. The
important deposits are located in Nagaur , Udaipur, Sirohi, Jaipur , Pali , Banswara ,
Jaisalmer , Bundi and Sikar districts of Rajasthan .Makrana in Nagaur district has one of
the world 's most famous marble deposits. The Taj Mahal , undoubtedly one of most
brilliant pieces of marble architecture, was made entirely with white marble from Makrana
.The total reserves in Makrana are estimated at 56 million tonnes in existing mining
leases.
Sandstone- Rajasthan is the largest producer of sandstone in India . It is found in
the Main Vindhya and Trans-Aravalli Vindhya sequences of Bharatpur , Tonk ,Kotah , Sawai
madhopur ,Chittrogarh and Jodhpur districts .Jodhpur sandstone has been used extensively
in buildings in Jodhpur city. The mining of this stone around Jodhpur had been done prior
to the city 's foundation in the year 1459 A.D. In recent times , the most prominent
building which has come up with the use of this stone is the Umaid Bhawan Palace in
Jodhpur. Outside India the Karachi harbour in Pakistan and the palace of Sultan of Oman
are a few examples of Jodhpur sandstone .This stone is widely used as building stone as
well as facing and roofing slab.
Limestone- Limestone ,suitable for building purposes , is extensively used as
flagstone, paving stone and also in building construction. In Rajasthan , flaggy limestone
, popularly known as Kotah stone , occurs in varying colours , from light brown to blue
and grey with fine grained texture. Kotah stone , both blue and brown , are dolomatic
limestones having remarkably fine texture .It has a compressive strength approximately
twice that of marble It also has a better abrasive value and good resistance to
delamination.
Slate - The usual colours of slate are black ,dark grey , greenish grey and
purplish grey. Sometimes colour changes do occur due to weathering. The harder varieties
of slate are used for flooring .In Rajasthan , slate occurs mainly in the Aravalli Hills
in parts of Ajmer, Alwar , Bharatpur ,Bundi ,Pali ,Sawaimadhopur ,Tonk and Udaipur
districts. |
